STENCH OF VOMIT, VOMIT OF STENCH
There once was a Princess who lived underwater / A lady so beautiful but god had blessed her with cancer / A blood hungry shark trying to conquer the world / Chewed off her arms while she was
surfing one day / The princess was depressed unable to wave / Hoping to get married on the beach or something / Her buddies still surf, a chunk bitten out of her board / A major bummer but itŽs
still chill man/ It was the day that Jesus cried / From inside his gore soaked shack / Philanthro was her Princess name / And all day she walked around nimbly / Stench of vomit, vomit of
stench / We were kicked out of the sophomore honour society / It was the day that Jesus got amnesia / From inside his shack draped with gore / Philanthro was her Princess name / And her goatee
crept down from her chin / Stench of vomit, vomit of stench / We stabbed her until we could stab no more/ Stench of vomit, vomit of stench / We were kicked out of the sophomore honour society
Und hier ein Interview von der Bandhomepage www.putrescence.com :
Interview for Grindead Magazine.
Hey Mike how's it going? Cheers for taking the time out to do this interview man. First off, would you be able to give us a brief run down on how Putrescence got together and how it all began so to
speak??
Hi Rebecca, thanks for having me. I would be delighted to fill you on what's happened up until now. Putrescence began as a thought shared between our drummer and bass player, a couple of brothers,
who as a result of their family blood bond, seem to do an awful lot of shit together. They live together, they have always been in bands together and they listen to each other have sensual
relations with their respective partners in their thin-walled suburban goat shanty. Prior to Putrescence they were both in a brutal death metal band called Seven Plagues. Once that band was done,
both of them wanted to try doing something more extreme. When they told me about it, I was immediately interested. This city has never really seen a metal or grind band influenced by Gut or WTN and
these sounds were just about all I was interested in listening to at the time. When these guys talked about the band, I was very interested in getting involved in something that had really fucking
deadly sliding riffs with tons of blasts. I told them about how I could really enjoy playing very simple and straight up traditional grindcore. I was offered the slot as the singer right then and
there. I'm not sure how our guitar player Jean got mixed up in this, but he was and still is involved in his fantastic melodic Euro black metal band Lykeum. They are a monolith in terms of their
song writing. They are very slow and cautious, so Jean had the time to get mixed up in this shit. As for me, I can't remember anything about the past five years.
What bands were you influenced by from the start? And are their any newer bands coming out that influence you these days?
Fuck, this was a couple of years ago. By the time I showed up, the rest of the band was trying to make some kind of fucking connection between Cannibal Corpse and Impaled. It was pretty funny. I
can't remember specifically what bands I wanted to rip off, probably shit like Inhume Sanity's Dawn and contemporary Regurgitate. Basically any bands that had huge monster riffs and a totally
filthy sound. Right now, one of the few bands plating out whose music I'm truly in awe of is General Surgery. Those guys are basically untouchable.
You guys have a pretty interesting background; unfortunately I've only just recently been introduced to your pre – Putrescence band called Swallowing Shit by a friend of mine. What's the
story behind this band? Is this still an active project, any releases available?? Do you have any other projects in the works at the moment??
Swallowing Shit is totally dead and has been since sometime in the late 90's. The story behind it is at one point, there was a revolving door of Winnipeg people who would write some music for the
band, quit and run for their fucking lives. During our tenure, we managed to scare the living shit out of bum-hole Christians, outrage a wide number of people and make a small name for ourselves
before the walls collapsed on us. At one point, two of us lived together and for a couple summers we would regularly play shows in the basement of our house. There were a few really good ones.
While we were a band, we released two EP's and a few comp. tracks that went on benefit records. A couple years after we were finished, G7 Welcoming Committee re-released everything onto CD with
some crazy one-sheet talking some whack jive about how we'd been banned from playing Winnipeg because of religious intolerance or something. It seems to have turned more than a few eyebrows.
How did you guys hook up with No Escape? Are you fans of any other No Escape artists?
We hooked up with No Escape as a result of a tape trading pal of mine in Australia . His name is Dave. He got a few copies of our demo for our friends in Australia as well as his radio show. When
it came out and forwarded one of them onto Dave from No Escape. When No Escape got in touch, I was kind of confused and really fucking surprised because I couldn't imagine what those guys had heard
on the demo that got them psyched them on us. I just sort of trusted that they weren't kidding and that given a proper chance in the studio hat maybe these songs would turn out well. Anyway, we owe
everything to our good pal Dave the Polesmoker! Cheers, ya daft cunt!
As for other No Escape artists, we are all avid fans of many of the bands on the label.
You guys have a sick new track up for download at www.goryified.com from the upcoming Embalming Theatre Split. Have you had much
response to the track? Will you be putting anymore up for download?
Thanks for saying so. The feedback that we've gotten from that track, "Faster Blunt Trauma, Kill Kill!" has all been positive. For us, The Embalming Theatre "What is Assfuck Twin #2 Eating Now?"
sessions really solidified what we've been trying to do since day one. We all realized that we were finally on the same page as far as the music is concerned, so we left the studio feeling really
confident about the new material. I think we have another song on our myspace site, a tune called "I Am Your Flesh". I doubt we'll toss anything else up for downloading, since half of the EP is
already out there. The EP is coming out on vinyl and there are way too many human pieces of garbage without turntables who aren't going to party for free on our account. Get a turntable and buy the
record.
So what else is up with Putrescence at the moment?
We just cancelled an appearance at the Maryland Death fest due to a family emergency. I don't feel like it's my place to go into may details in this context, but when a family member becomes
unexpectedly hospitalized, it seems as though the bands' priorities take a bit of a back seat. I feel bad for the family, I feel bad about canceling. Two of us are still going to the fest, so it
will still be amazing, but as a band, we're not playing. Right now, we are in the midst of writing new material for what is supposed to be a CDEP/7"EP for Last House on the Right. I think we'll be
finished writing that within the next month and then we record. It's been a long time since I've heard from Last House though, so who knows what's going on. After that, we continue writing until a
September eastern Canadian tour. We will be playing locally a couple times, but the priority is writing new material and inhaling he fumes of cat shit from the evil litter box in the basement where
we jam. I think we might also plan on buying a bag of Evil Johnny Cat.
What sort of sound are you guys going for with these new releases? Can we expect something along the same lines as Mangled… or are you going for a new approach this time around??
Judging from the ghetto blaster recorded songs that I'm trying to lay vocals down for right now, we are playing similar stuff as the "Mangled..." record. There are a few more fills that are
interesting and I think we've worked harder on the new songs than we have on any of our old shit, so it will be interesting to see how they all turn out. I think there is more on an emphasis on
detail this time around. I think the new stuff will end up sounding very powerful and rotten. And highly unoriginal too.
The full length is fuckin killer. I've heard a few tracks from Occult…. demo And the Mangled… release sounds like a definite step in the right direction for you guys. Did you guys
have much of fan base spawn from the Occult... demo?? How has the Full Length been received???
Most of the demo was written prior to me sticking my fucking nose in the song writing process. Now that we are a cohesive song writing unit with input from everyone, we are able to make band
practice more than an excuse to get shit-faced with ugly retards on Tuesday nights. The songs on the Mangled CD that were written after the demo to me, speaks to the direction we want to go in even
though we still love to play a couple of tunes from the demo. Everyone has some pretty particular musical preferences that they want to see reflected, so there is some kind of collective balance
created that forges our direction. It's interesting, I guess? Maybe not. Well, watching our guitar player get fucking wasted on white rum is probably more interesting to talk about, but whatevs. We
didn't really have much of a fan-base until No Escape saved our asses and then people sort of scratched their heads and wondered "how the fuck did that just happen to those shitty guys?"
The use of Lyrics in grind/death metal is a pretty debatable subject. What do you think about it if anything? Does Putrescence use lyrics or is there any definite concept in your music??
I grew up listening to punk bands and then grind bands always reading their lyric sheets. It's the first thing I do when checking out a record. As a lyric writer, I want to know what the singer is
thinking about. So lyrics continue to be of central importance to me, even though at this point in my life, I'm writing about some pretty fucking low-brow stuff. You might not believe this, but
it's important that my lyrics are compare to "Airplane II" instead of "Dude, Where's My Car?" There is a concept and there are standards I set for myself. If the rest of the band is going to put
some effort into this shit, then the least I can do is pull my own weight and contribute to the max. Having said that, I've heard other bands talk about how the singers' voice is an instrument and
that there are no lyrics. Some of my favorite bands seem to have this attitude, so it doesn't bust me up on the inside and turn each day into an uncontrollable nightmare without end.
I'm not too familiar with many bands from Canada aside from of course Cryptopsy, and some of the newer Cumgun, Lapidate and Anal Bleeding bands. I'm not sure what its like anywhere else, but down
here Canada is probably more renowned for its War Metal related bands. Has there been a shift in the metal coming out of Canada lately? Are their any bands worth mentioning you can think of??
Canada is a neat place. It's also fairly frustrating because no one really lives very close to each other. Cities are fucking far apart especially in Western Canada, so there are some major gulfs
that are not crossed as often as they should be. There are some really kick-ass bands in Canada right now. Fuck the Facts, Mesrine, Narcissistic, Poser Disposer, Mechanical Separation, Neckbeerd,
Endless Blockade, Rammer, Neuraxis, Cursed, Maniac Sumo Cunt, Fistfuck, Kursk and SNFU, who just put out the best record they've done in ten fucking years. I could go on for a while, but I am fresh
out of clove cigarettes and simply cannot type without one between my sensuous lips..
Hows the scene up in Canada ? Do all the metal genres get along up there?? Do you guys get much scene support in Canada ??
I think we get a decent amount of support here in Canada . I mean, it's not much, most people are much more into and providing support to diet metal like In Flames and eye shadow type music, but we
didn't start the band concerned about any of that. The global DIY community has given us more support than anyone else ever will. We feel more at home working with people who understand what this
music is about. As for locally, there are a few friendly faces that usually show up to see us play, so that's exciting.
Is it true you guys club seals up there or what?! Haha, I heard this is a pretty strange Canadian habit, along with wearing those fucked up hats.. What's with that?
I'm the only member of this band that does not club baby seals. It's totally fucked up to me, the cruelty that these idiots will go to in order to appease their appetites for northern flavors. Most
recently, and somewhat thankfully, they got busted for hunting too many baby seals and when they showed their Manitoba Metis Federation hunting licenses to the conservation officers, our guitar
player got kicked in the groin by an officer wearing snow shoes and while getting repaired in the ER, doctors ended up slapping him around a bit.
As for the two other baby seal clubbers, upon arrest, they were forced to eat their fake hunting licenses and then perform strip teases for each other. I guess incest is probably not an interesting
topic to discuss either but the whole incident was kind of funny since I heard that when our bass player undressed, he was already wearing a pair of shimmery toast-colored pantyhose. And he had an
erection. Ha ha, what the fuck?
As for fucked up hats, yes it's all true. I wear a "chapeau de marin" (sailors hat) at our gigs and it often results in getting into conversations with females who would otherwise not want to know
exciting aspects of my life (such as my fondness for still life paintings) and my future goals (professional cigar smoker) if I wasn't wearing the hat. It's become a bit of a charm for me. It's the
kind of thing that other guys get jealous of when they see me posing for pictures with two girls at my side all the time. I can't really explain it, but when wearing the hat, I seem to possess a
kind of animalistic mystic.
Do you only listen to brutal music? Or do you have any other musical interests? Considering I'm actually sitting here listening to u2 while I write this haha, what's your opinion on being open
minded when it comes to music?
Well that's neat. I was listening to some disco earlier on today. I think listening to a variety of music is an important part of life. I don't think I could only survive on a diet of Czech
techno-influenced grind core. I would probably just quit music and become a fucking lame-ass cop or a street team member for Victory Records, maybe. I've been listening to a lot of Pulp, Electric
Six, !!! and some Mars Volta…all of it has been kicking my ass. If that makes me a scenester, than pass me the pink studded belt and the ladies jeans. I couldn't care less. I can't survive
on a strict diet of brutal death…I'd wilt like a flower after and weep heavily.
Is there anything behind your name "Soiled Depends"??
Not much other than the delight that shines on the faces of a couple hose bags here that seem to enjoy calling me Soiled Depends instead of Mike. It started off as my username on the Relapse UBB a
few years ago and due to this band, it lives on in real time.
This might be a hard one, but what would you name as your top five albums of all time? (High Fidelity Styles haha)
Kreator "Out of the Dark Into the Light"
Razor "Shotgun Justice"
Christ on a Crutch "Crime Pays When Pigs Die"
Dead Infection "Chapter of Accidents"
Red Fisher "Catch and Release"
Well I think that pretty much wraps it up man, Thanks again for doing this interview, keep in touch, I can't wait to hear the new shit!! Before we end Is there anything else you'd like to add? How
can our readers get in touch with you and your merchandise??
Yeah, I'd like to warn everyone about this lame fucking douche bag named Jason McKenzie. He lives in Atlantic Canada and plays in a band called Collapse. I think he fucks codfish in the pooper. He
fucking ripped me off on eBay for one lousy Machetazo DVD and didn't think that I would be able to do the research to hunt him down. He's a lousy, ugly fucking asshole that should be exposed for
what he is: a fucking bum who probably isn't above a purse snatching.
Anyways, if anyone wants to get a hold of us, we have shirts in all sizes as well as CD's available for sale. Drop us a line. info@putrescence.com
Thanks for the interview Rebecca! All the best!

Soiled Depends speaks with John, from In The Meantime.
Can you give us a detailed history on the band?
There isn’t a whole lot of history at this point as we started out in January 2003. Our drummer and bass players’ previous band Seven Plagues had just broken up. I was at the point
where I felt like contributing some vocals in a gore band. Our guitar player had some spare time on his hands when not playing with his other band, Lykeum. By the time I showed up, the rest of them
had already written a few songs for me to learn. We started playing shows after about three months of practicing and since then we’ve never really looked back. In that time, we have managed
to play out of town a couple times, record a demo, make some shirts and meet some cool people through the band.
Could you describe your sound to those unfortunate souls yet to hear you?
I’m never very good at describing the sounds we make. We are a grind band that is heavily influenced by Carcass. We try to write music that is fast, dense and heavy. A couple of people have
observed that we are somewhat technical. I don’t really agree with the statement, but I think that our guitar player does have an appreciation for bands like Ion Dissonance and enjoys funky
grindcore bands. We write head banging old school grind that is straight up, no frills and filthy. Writing music as though it’s a science experiment can be pretentious as fuck and we want to
leave all that shit in the dust. We aren’t here to dance around people’s eardrums like elves and fairies, we are here to deliver a goddamned pile driver off the top ropes.
Your debut full length is due out soon on Australia’s own No Escape Records. Could you tell us a little about it? What can we expect?
I have a couple of friends who live in Australia who know Dave/No Escape. I wanted them to get a copy of the demo when it came out, because we were tape trading pals. Nice folks. Anyways, I was
told to send an extra copy so that Dave could listen to it. I guess he liked it because he got back to us really quickly. It is all very exciting to me as I am a fan of many of the bands on his
label. This arrangement with Dave has boosted my confidence in various aspects of my life. The dandruff has almost cleared up and I look five years younger than I really am. As far as what to
expect, it’s going to be called “Mangled, Hollowed Out and Vomit Filled”. It will be 13 blasts of stale, rotten music.
You guys have an EP out, could you tell us a bit about it/ How long has it been out and how has the response been?
We released the “Occult Blood and Excrement” demo earlier this year. We did it at my house with a guy named Craig Boychuk. He plays bass in another band I am in called Head Hits
Concrete. He is an exceptionally talented sound engineer who records most of the heavy bands in town. He is a bit of a rarity in that he knows how to make the most out of a four track recording. We
recoded six songs and the quality far surpassed my expectations. I developed a fond relationship with the music at that point. As well, we had our good friend Heather McKinnon design us some
artwork which I think is really hot shit. It was a notable point, because things began to click for us at that point. We knew enough about each other to understand what kind of music the band
needed to write. Everything clicked for us once the demo was recorded and song writing has been smooth ever since.
As for the response, as far as I can tell, people are into the music. We are somewhat unique in Winnipeg in that nobody is really playing this style, so we probably get away with lots of bullshit
that we might not if there were more bands around to see through our lies.
Lyrically, who is responsible for the lyrics and great song titles?
That would be me. I grew up on Fangoria magazine and I bought the first issue of Gore Zone when that mag started up. I also used to buy Thrash Metal magazine and all kinds of horror movie posters
as well. This was all back in Junior High. I wanted to get into a band like this to reclaim this history and to have a good time with it. My impression of the death metal scene is that people are
way too uptight and these people take themselves way too seriously. You can tell by the outrageous guarantees that bands around here demand. It’s a joke. I thought it would be fun to take
these attitudes and norms and fuck around with them a bit. Writing outrageous lyrics seems like a way for us to look at nerdy metal heads like ourselves and laugh at the ridiculous aspects of it
all. I think that this kind of music is fucking rad and I am very keen on bands who are serious about what they do, but not so serious that they can’t have any fun.
Could you tell us about your local underground scene, what bands should we keep an eye out for?
Well, locally, Malefaction are hanging up their skates at the end of this year. It’s weird because they have been a presence locally for 12 years. They will leave a void, that’s for
sure. Other bands I’m into are the Blasphenaut, Ditchpig, Under Pressure, He Broke, Skeleton and too many others to mention. Our drummer books a lot of metal shows in Winnipeg and I book a
lot of grind bands, so we are active in this scene other than just playing in bands. A lot of people who claim to be into metal never really come out to shows unless it’s Cannibal Corpse or
some bullshit, so it can be very frustrating and thankless to be from this shit-hole.
What bands have influenced your sound?
The standards..Regurgitate, Inhume, Dead Infection, Bodies Lay Broken, Birdflesh, Squash Bowels. We are also fond of classics like Razor, SOD, Kreator and 80’s thrash bands.
As far as touring goes, how far have you ventured? What would be yor most memorable gig to date?
We played the Lethbridge Deathfest last year which was a weekend trip to Alberta. That was kind of fun. I think I drank twelve beers before we even climbed on the stage. It was out of hand, but I
found it rather amusing, as you can imagine. I do believe I urinated myself in the drivers seat of our Eddie Bauer Special Edition of the Dodge Durango, one of the finest SUV’s on the market.
We have also played Saskatoon, which is 8 hours west of Winnipeg. That was fun because there is a mild resurgence of grindcore happening there. It was fun but I wish we could have played an all
ages show. We considered touring this year, btu figured that we should release some music and worry about making sure that people have heard of us first.
As far as our most memorable gig, I am sure everyone has their own answer to that one, but suffice to say, the one that comes to my mind first is a basement show we played in Winnipeg. Forty people
showed up, lots of them were friends and they knew the music, so they seemed to really enjoy both the libation and the music. I almost broke my head that night, but it was fun. The police ended up
breaking up the gig, but we lit them on fire and had BBQ. The food sucked, but I liked the music.
What CD’s are you listening to at the moment?
We are listening to a lot of Martyr, Iron Maiden, Electric Six, Motley Crue, Razor, Suffocation, Turbonegro, General Surgery, Ghoul, Metallica, Lightening Bolt and some old Bolt Thrower. Holy fuck,
Lightening Bolt AND Bolt Thrower. Weird, I just noticed that.
What does the immediate future hold for Putrescence?
We are headed into the recording studio with Craig Boychuk to record a coaster for No Escape. We are contemplating stealing artwork from Maz Aguillera Hellweg, weighing in the pros and cons of
getting the living Christ sued out of our asses for lifting his shit without permission. We’re playing a couple shows right away and are lookingforward to playing the Lethbridge Deathfest
once again with Ghoul in September. We will likely stay in a holding pattern until the CD is out and people get a chance to respond to it before we make any other idiotic plans.
Lastly, thanks for your time…feel free to add anything else….
Hello and cheers to all aussie pals, especially King Of The Roten, Christoph, Dave, Ben, Chris & Rohan. Pleae notify us once you have held the “plane tickets for Putrescence” bake
sale so we can come and drink you all under the table. RIP The Kill, Warsore, and Magnicite. Thanks a lot for the interview as well, we are fucking bloody chuffed. All the best with the zine. Take
care!
